General Information

Studium Excitare is a quarterly journal dedicated to the translation of Orthodox Confessional Lutheran writings, focusing on the teaching of today's Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod [WELS]. Studium Excitare is published by the students in confessional languages studies at Martin Luther College [MLC], New Ulm, MN, along with contributions from MLC alumni who participated in those studies.

Format
Studium Excitare is published both in print and online. The print copies are distributed on the Martin Luther College campus. Due to financial and staff limitations, we are not able to distribute hard copies beyond the MLC campus. For this reason, we publish all of our content on the web as well. The website mirrors the print publication, and in some cases, offers expanded articles that are not available in the print edition.

Purpose
We publish this journal not only to hone our own skills of translation and study, but also to allow our readers to learn from, as well as gain a deeper appreciation of the historical, confessional works of the Lutheran Church. We seek to provide translations of works not previously translated.

Occasionally we will offer new translations of already translated pieces. By doing this we hope to show that writings in the confessional languages are often so rich in meaning that one English translation can never do it complete justice. A study and re-study in the original language is always beneficial. This, we hope, illustrates the importance of confessional language study for future pastors, while at the same time providing the opportunity for those who do not know the confessional languages to study and learn from the fathers.

To this end we seek to glorify God in our work, for he has blessed us with a rich heritage of valuable writings regarding His divine doctrine and teaching.

Our Title
"Studium Excitare" is a Latin phrase that, literally translated, means "to arouse zeal." This phrase is employed in early Lutheran church writings (e.g. Heidelberg Disputation) and summarizes the purpose of our publication.
